Kona Yoga began with two weekly yoga classes taught by Barbara Uechi in the conference
room at Kona
Transportation a little over 10 years ago. At the time, Barbara was a realtor and
active in many community organizations.
Gradually, yoga began to reposition her life as effectively as it was repositioning her physical structure. She closed her real estate practice
and spent the next few years attending yoga and other health related workshops. The desire for a better understanding of anatomy led her to
massage school and a State of Hawaii massage license.
The rise in popularity of yoga and a growing Kona community underscored Barbara's wish for her own studio. The Law of Attraction was apparently working in full force
when fellow yoga instructor Don Slocum and massage therapist Moku-wai Busch voiced their support of a space in the Sunset Shopping Plaza.
Two months of reconstruction were followed by two weeks of vacation and then the doors to Kona Yoga, The Center of Balance, were opened for
business in January 2003.
Acupuncturist Krista Anderson moved her practice to Kona Yoga in April and blended Traditional Chinese Medicine with the ancient practice
of Yoga, the science of massage, kinesiology and other body therapies.
The instructors and therapists at the Center simply view themselves as conduits
for the healing benefits of their particular practices. They believe that it is the individual who decides to alter the patterns of pain and ill health
and makes the move toward a state of Balance. Since 'like attracts like', The Center draws those who regard their health and well-being as a
priority and are open to methods of treating their Whole (body, mind and spirit) Being.
